“Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin”.

(Matthew 17.27)

We have a tendency to see our job, relevant clients, profitable contracts, family or friends as the provider for our growth or success. It’s a fact that God can use all of them to benefit us, but God is our source of life. The scripture says that every good gift comes from our father in heaven above. That good gift may come through people, but it came from God first. Your salary may come through your company, but it came from your heavenly Father.  People are not your provider; God is. According to Ephesians 1.3 He is the one who has blessed you in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Don’t make this big mistake. You cannot make people your provider. Behind the salary, behind the opportunity, behind the favor is the Most High God causing people to be good to you, causing doors to open, causing clients to seek you out. Be grateful for the resource but keep your eyes on the provider.

Matthew 17.27 declares that when Peter didn’t have money to pay his taxes, Jesus told him to go to the lake and catch a fish. The first fish he caught had a gold coin in it, enough to pay his taxes.  God was showing us how he can use different resources.  If a contract at work comes to an end looks like you’re going to be set back. However, don’t be discouraged. God has another fish. He has ways that we’ve never thought of as long as you’re keeping him first place you are connected to a supply line that will never run dry.  You are not at the mercy of the economy or your boss or who likes you. God has all kinds of resources he can use. When a door closes, you go through a setback you have to remind yourself: it’s not the resource blessing you, it’s the provider.

So, I encourage you today to have the Lord as your only provider. Believe he is able to do immeasurably more than all you ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, and experiment abundance flowing into your life when gratitude flows out of your heart.
Prayer: Lord I recognize you’re the provider of my life. I know this job gives me a paycheck, but you’re the source of the income.  This company gave me a good position but you’re the source of the favor. My friends and family have been supporting me in difficult times, but I know all I have come from you. And I’m thankful for that. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Home For God’s Spirit

God gave the Israelites their manna one day at a time. They were not allowed to store any of it up for another time – by doing this, they showed their trust and confidence in God and His promise to provide for them each day. Any time they did collect more than enough for one day, it became rotten and smelled bad. Many people say they have a “stinking, rotten life.” They don’t mean they smell – I think they’re saying they have taken on too much – too much work, too much responsibility, too much to think through and it’s so much, they have nowhere to put it and much is wasted. They are complicating today trying to gather provision for tomorrow.
