“Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
Psalm 42:11 (NIV)

The composition of Psalm 42 is attributed to the sons of Korah, a group of Levitical musicians and singers who were responsible for participating in the temple worship. This psalm reveals to us some important things that we should eagerly seek.

The psalmist feels thirsty for the presence of God. He does not desire just a superficial religious experience but yearns for an intimate and personal relationship with the Creator. Verse 3 is marked by a feeling of God’s absence. The psalmist says, “My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me continually,
‘Where is your God?’” He shows the deep suffering he is experiencing, a pain that seems endless and without comfort.

How many of us have not been through similar situations in which it seems that God is not present or does not answer our prayers. Yet, during pain, the psalmist reminds us of the importance of maintaining our hope in God. He continues to seek God, showing that, even when we do not feel His presence, we must
persevere in faith.

This type of conflict and inner turmoil is common in the Christian life. Often, our feelings want to lead us to despair, but our faith calls us to trust in God. This psalm leads us to meditate that, even when we are downcast, we can choose to place our hope in God and believe that He will still bring relief and restoration.
Moreover, it shows us the relevance of prayer as a means of reconnecting with God in times of suffering. The psalmist cries out to God in the midst of his suffering, expressing his pain and doubts. He pours out his heart in the presence of the Almighty. Prayer is how we can bring our concerns to God and seek comfort in
His presence.

In this context, prayer is not only a request for help, but also an act of trust and surrender. When we pray, we are demonstrating our dependence on God and recognizing that, despite our limitations, He has the power to transform our circumstances. Even if God’s answer does not come immediately, prayer helps us
to keep our faith alive, and our hope renewed.

Despite his sorrow and affliction, the psalmist does not lose hope in God. He remembers that God is his rock and refuge, and that He will not forget him. He encourages himself to wait on God and to praise Him, acknowledging Him as his help and his God.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for listening to me when I express my feelings. No matter how I feel, help me always to remember Your love and to praise You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

God gave the Israelites their manna one day at a time. They were not allowed to store any of it up for another time – by doing this, they showed their trust and confidence in God and His promise to provide for them each day. Any time they did collect more than enough for one day, it became rotten and smelled bad. Many people say they have a “stinking, rotten life.” They don’t mean they smell – I think they’re saying they have taken on too much – too much work, too much responsibility, too much to think through and it’s so much, they have nowhere to put it and much is wasted. They are complicating today trying to gather provision for tomorrow.
