“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and
in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”
(2Timothy 1:5 (NIV))
When we think about people who influenced the spread of the Gospel, we often remember apostles, missionaries, and great preachers. Rarely do we think about mothers and grandmothers whose names appear only briefly in Scripture. Yet, God’s Word reminds us that some of the most powerful influences come from quiet faith lived at home.
Timothy, one of the most important leaders in the early church and a close companion of the apostle Paul, did not begin his journey with God in a public ministry. His faith began at home. Paul writes that Timothy had a “sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice” (2 Timothy 1:5).
Lois and Eunice were not famous. They never preached to crowds or traveled on missionary journeys. But they taught Timothy the Scriptures, shaped his character, and planted faith in his heart from an early age. Their daily obedience prepared Timothy to become a strong servant of Christ and a key leader in the church.
This reminds us that God often works through faithfulness that no one applauds. Teaching a child, praying consistently, living a godly example – these acts may seem small, but their impact can echo through generations. Without Lois and Eunice, there might not have been a Timothy as we know him.
God knows how to use our potential, even when it is expressed in ordinary, hidden ways. What we do quietly today may become the foundation for someone else’s powerful ministry tomorrow.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for reminding us that no act of faith is insignificant. Help us be faithful in the places You have planted us, even when no one sees. Use our lives to influence others for Your Kingdom, and may our obedience bear fruit beyond what we can imagine. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
