The Way of God – When the Small Become Great

“But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 – KJV)

Another aspect of the way God works is revealed in whom He chooses. While human logic values appearance, status, and visible ability, God looks beyond the external and sees the heart.

David’s story illustrates this truth. When Samuel was sent to anoint a king, all expectations pointed toward those who seemed strong and impressive. Yet God chose the one who was overlooked—the youngest, the one not even considered. This reminds us that God’s standard is not outward qualification, but inward disposition.

It is easy to feel inadequate when comparing ourselves to others. Many believe they are too small, too inexperienced, or not capable enough to be used by God. However, God’s way confronts this mindset. He is not limited by human expectations and does not depend on human standards to fulfill His purposes.

This truth calls us to realign our perspective. Instead of focusing on what we lack, we are invited to cultivate a heart that is available, faithful, and surrendered. What matters most is not how others see us, but how God sees us.

When we understand this, we begin to value what God values. We learn that no one is insignificant in His Kingdom. In His hands, the overlooked become instruments of His glory, and what seems small becomes part of something far greater.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see myself the way You see me. Many times, I focus on my limitations and feel unqualified, but I know that You look at the heart. Shape my heart to be humble, willing, and surrendered to You. Remove from me the need to be valued by appearances and teach me to rest in Your calling. Use my life according to Your purpose, and help me trust that in Your hands, even what seems small can become great. In Jesus’ name, amen.
